About

The Minier Tap was founded in February 1975 by Larry McMahon, an extremely devout Irish-Catholic man who had a passion for great drinks and good times. Larry was raised in Clinton, Iowa, where his family owned and operated an alcohol distributorship. Being raised around alcohol distribution led to Larry’s love for the industry. After meeting his wife, Kathy, at college in Iowa they moved to Normal, Illinois where Kathy began teaching.

larryOne day in early 1975 while Larry was on one of his alcohol distributing routes, when he went through the small, quiet town of Minier, Illinois where he passed a “for sale” sign in the window of a business on Main Street. He decided then and there to buy the business and open The Tap. As told by his daughter and part operator of the Minier Tap , Molly McMahon-Fonger, her father had an incredible passion for people and life. He spent his life pouring his heart and soul into the business he loved, as well as welcoming the entire town as if they were his own family.

Not long after the passing of Larry the family faced another trauma when the business he had dedicated his life to burnt down in August 2013. While Kathy and the rest of the family debated over whether to re-open or stay closed, they finally came to the conclusion that remodeling the business is what Larry would have wanted. After renovating the tap and adding an outside patio as well as more food items to the menu, the Minier Tap reopened August 26, 2014.
